Hey Jas, sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well, hope all is
better now.
To the UUPA leaders in general, I'm wondering whether there might not
be an outreach opportunity here to UUA for UUPA in light of the
continuing tendency for members of the press to misrepresent UUPA's
means of origin and how it relates (or not) to UUA. Of course, I
realize that the opposition has reason to trump up the level of
threat we pose, but we don't have to necessarily let the record go
uncorrected as to non-factual reporting.
Though generally more conservative in bent, the Washington Times is
not a fringe publication and is a mainstream newspaper accountable as
to upholding ethical reporting standards. I'm wondering whether UUPA
reaching out to UUA and inviting collaboration to determine how best
to correct the record might be the right thing to do? Is anyone in
UUPA in regular contact with someone at UUA with whom we are talking
collaboratively already, perhaps?
In the work I do with the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom I've
observed that generally sensationalist pieces written by religious
extremists and published in fringe publications do not merit or
receive comment. I'm not sure what NCSF's media people would
recommend in this instance - maybe nothing, but it may still be
appropriate for UUPA to dialogue with UUA about this specific
article, if no other reason than to come to a mutual understanding of
how to proceed as this dismaying newspaper reporting practice
continues.
I'd be happy to help with this, but being so new as a UU I wouldn't
know where to start. Please let me know if there is anything I can
do to help, though, I'm willing if someone points me in the right
direction.
