Re: [UUPoly-L] RE: Fwd: Google Alert - polyamory

My understanding is that the UUPA's acronym stands for "Unitarian Universalists *for* Polyamory Awareness", not "Unitarian Universalist Something Something". It seems to me that it would be unreasonable to ask a group of specifically Unitarian Universalists not to use the words "Unitarian Universalists for" in their group name ... regardless of whether or not the group is formally approved somehow by the UUA. How else is a group of gathered UU anythings supposed to describe themselves?

Jasmine,

As a former UUA district board member who has witnessed poly-related UU
public relations concerns from other UUA district board members,
ministers, and district field staff within my district, I would suggest
that some Unitarian Universalists with poly-related public relations
concerns might ask us to remove the words "Unitarian Universalist" from
our organization's name.

The UUA Board of Trustees minutes from the June 2005 meeting contains
this request:

==============================================
UUA Board of Trustees Minutes, 22-28 June 2005 -- comments on "other
groups" who don't meet the requirements for being formally recognized
UUA affiliates

"These are groups, often at a start-up phase, which are not formally
affiliated with the UUA but are composed of UUs and organized to support
UU-related activities (e.g., Statements of Conscience, Actions of
Immediate Witness, particular initiatives related to UU programs).

There is no UUA support and such groups are asked to not use 'Unitarian
Universalist' in their title.

Program slots at General Assembly will be awarded by application to the
General Assembly Planning Committee.

Since UUPA was created and named before this request was put into the
UUA Board minutes and UUPA was formerly a recognized affiliate prior to
the revoking of affiliate status, I don't see keeping "Unitarian
Universalist" in the name as inappropriate.

But I'm sure that some Unitarian Universalists would consider it so.
And I wouldn't be surprised to see these folks using Kurtz' article and
articles quoting Kurtz as one reason for supporting this request.

Take care,
Steve
