One recent news item has piqued my interest. A judge in Hildale, Utah has a
polygamous family, and an order was filed seeking to remove him from office
as unsuitable to serve, based solely on his polygamy. He has served as judge
for 25 years. There are no other complaints against him, no issues of child
brides or coercion, no abuse, no welfare fraud, no criminal charges, no
nothing. Just more than one wife, only one of which is a legal marriage.
This case has been heard by the Utah Supreme Court. Early November articles
said the case would be decided within 3 months, but I can't find any
decision or updates.

Topic: Impeachment and Disciplining of Judges Article Title: Utah Judge With
3 Wives Fights for Job Publication: The Associated Press November 2, 2005
Article reports that the Utah Supreme Court will review a Judicial Conduct
Commission decision that removed a judge from the bench because he has three
wives. The people who sought Judge Walter Steedâs removal say that after
taking an oath to uphold the law, he should not be breaking it. Although bigamy is
a third-degree felony in Utah that is punishable by up to five years in
prison, prosecutors have decided not to prosecute the judge. Judge Steed was on
the bench for 23 years before the Tapestry Against Polygamy, a group of women
who were formerly polygamous but now seek to help other polygamous women
leave secretive colonies that adhere to the practice, lodged a complaint against
the judge in 2003. The Judicial Conduct Commission ordered Judge Steedâs
removal from the bench in February 2005, after a 14-month investigation confirmed
that he was married to three sisters.
