Re: [UUPoly-L] UUCA: welcoming congregation

Many of the problems regarding acceptance/rejection of the poly lifestyle may be partly due to the fact that poly is not presented in a way that is acceptable to any given individual or UU entity.

What is acceptable in a blue state environment may be totally unacceptable in a red state environment. Obviously it is not quite that simple, but unfortunately much of the bad publicity is well deserved, partly due to the fact that many due not realize that polyamory is more of an esoteric postion about human relationships rather than an exoteric one. All of this self-serving bloviating with exoteric fourth estate folks certainly has not helped.

I have recently presented polyamory to someone in some private correspondence with a follow up quote taken from a book by Jimmy Carter's sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton. In that book one could posit the notion, which I back-handedly did, that polyamory grew out of the Crowleyian notion of thelema and agape, which goes back millenia.

There is a wonderful disquisition on the source of STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND at a website called something like grokking tribe.net.

Incidentally, Ruth Carter Stapleton played the agape card, which does not have quite the perjorative connotations that the word polyamory does. Unfortunately there is very little amory within the polyamory community, there is too much emphasis on cookie&nookie, sad to say.

I will second the notion regarding Hollywood, Florida. One woman there was on UUPOLY for several years, but eventually got bored with all the cookie&nookie emphasis.

P.S. Anyone that wants to mail me one dollar will get a photocophy of RCS's position on agape. I will do what I can to keep in reasonable conformance with any copyright restrictions.

I, for one, was disappointed in the "Welcoming Congregation" label (and it is,
IMNSHO, just a label) the UUCFL uses... When I and my SO opened up to
a few of the members we thought might be "tolerant" (themselves being gay couples)
we received a terse rebuke for our poly lifestyle - and - at one time the minister
told me face-to-face that poly was just an excuse to have free sex outside of marriage.
So if I am a little biased when it comes to the UUA label of congregations being
welcoming it is due to my first hand and repeated experiences.

(In all fairness I visited another UU fellowship in Hollywood, FL and they were the
most welcoming, accepting, and friendly group I encountered outside of the Mission
Peak congregation in California...)

  well, well, well!

indeed! so many old friends I recognize here! I'm pleased. :-)

in answer to Cat's Q: my partner is UU

and I've been attending DC's River Road w/her during our 6-yr LDR.

I'm a friend of UUCA (Atlanta), where I have been attending sporadically for the past 5 years.

hm, ok, for a UU topic:

what's y'all's experience as to how various congregations

support their welcoming congretation idea.

i.e.: when I walk in the door how do I know this is a welcoming congregation?

I attended a UUCA reforming meeting of their GLBTQ group

and when I introduced myself as poly got a "What's that?" Q.

there was at least another Q attending

-- tho I didn't pick up on which type of Q --

other than tatooed and pierced.

Anyway, one of the mothers was a Pflag facilitator

http://www.pflag.org/

and in private conversation wondered if I would be interested in certification.

personally I'm interested in being a facilitator as my UU community contribution

tho I might better fit in as a new person in the Covenant Group.

thanx again for the various welcomes

Ron beaming :-) in Atlanta
