I disagree, with respect to those of us in academia. I
don't know of any institututions more socially liberal and
accepting of alternative lifestyles than modern American
universities, especially the large and well known ones. I
taught for many years on a campus on which the majority of
the deans were openly gay, and my nudist, multi-partner
lifestyle was considered ho-hum.
At the same time those very institutions that are so open to
alternative lifestyles are largely closed to conservative
political and economic thinking, and do not support the free
expression of non-liberal ideas. Look in the closets at any
large university and you will find some conservatives. :-)
