[UUPoly-L] UU and blue/red poly

Holiday and Solstice greetings to everyone here on the UUPA discussion group.
 
We just want to thank the members who have been involved in some of the previous posts and discussions. While not always applicable to us, the comments are thoughtful, well reasoned and definitely informative.
 
Just a few comments from us and then we will wait to read the elicited replies.
 
Gypsey, that was a very interesting project you had on the percentage of red state/blue state swingers.
It's not too shocking that you find swingers on both sides of the aisle as sex is a powerful force regardless of political affiliation. I would tend to think that one main difference is that blue men and women are more open and liberal (true sense of the word) in accepting and discussing human sexuality outside of the standard monogamous hetero couples.
 
In our case, I am red and my wife is blue and we fall into the gen X category. We know or have been in contact with many swingers and I would have to agree that a majority are in the baby boomer genre but there are quite a few in the gen X era as well. Many of the swinging parties here in the metro are with both boomers and gen xers. 
 
The poly couples we know from church and our circle of friends are all gen Xers. Again,as in most things, Minnesota may be an exception.
 
As in all cases, the main factor needs to be the effect these relationships have on the children. If secrecy is deemed a solution for the poly couples or swingers, then so be it. If the children are healthy and well-adjusted with a poly family, then that's perfectly fine, at least in my humble opinion. The more positive male and female role models in a child's life, the better off we'll all be, not just the kiddies.
 
However, I must also respond to Anita's study from Salon.com. I don't know if there's a correlation between viewing pornography and polymamory/swinging but there's definitely a link with the debasing and degrading of women and the pornification of our culture.
 
I am not shocked that many young college women view porn movies as a legitimate sexual behavior since we have been uber sexualizing our young girls for several decades now. I think that it speaks to Madison Avenue and Hollywood pushing our young girls to mature faster, dress like ho's from early adolescence on and that they are simply sex objects for men, must be bi and totally shaven.
 
I would hope that those who engage in both swinging and polyamory are interested more than in just the two girls fantasy and that the women are treated as equals and not just spoils for the right guy/couples. You shouldn't need porn to be poly and that's the conclusion that Anita's article leads us to believe.
 
Basically, pornography shouldn't have any connection to polyamory or swinging. Exploiting women for any purpose should be discouraged and, especially in the UU community, spoken out against loudly and protested just as much as war or injustice in places like Sudan.
