More important stats are that in the societies mentioned, there are much lower rates of sexually transmitted disease, teen pregnancy, and other issues which are rampant in many parts of the US ... esp Texas and other parts of the Bible belt, home of "abstinence-only".

I think the question contains part of the answer:
"abortions are the norm" and to that I would add that other,
less controversial, forms of birth control are readily
available.

Jay m seems to equate lower birth rates with lower levels of
intercourse and partner sex, and I don't believe he makes a
strong case, because of the birth control variable.
