Re: [UUPoly-L] Open Marriage--Polyamory
"sexism is still a reality in society at large",
There is a UU Curriculum (Women and Religion, 2005) called 'Unraveling the Gender Knot', based in part on the Allan G. Johnson book "The Gender Knot; unraveling our patriarchal legacy", that we are offering for the 4th time in the DC area UU churches, re our patriarchial culture/society that most dismiss as 'the way things are'. They don't need to be! It's a step on the road, and a part of the poly story, as debated in these threads. Awake, Aware, Arise!

And, again, for me this whole argument falls apart under the same principles
as the argument that the abolition of slavery would "negatively impact" the
economy of the south in the 1800s. Yes, the abolition of slavery *did*
'negatively impact' the economy of the south - it was nevertheless the only
just action and society did eventually adjust.
IMO the many laws and institutions (and many of the customs) surrounding
marriage between two people are rooted in civil injustice and customs which
grew out of gender and class inequity, and these laws, institutions and many
of the customs perpetuate a hegemonic paradigm which is in and of itself
harmful to society. Making legalistic arguments about 'due diligence' will
not change those sociological facts. Where you see it causing problems
because "sexism is still a reality in society at large", I see it as a
radical move which challenges the sexism inherent in the 'traditional'
monogamous structure. And simply because my "due diligence" does not match
your definition, does not mean that due diligence is not being done/has not
been done.

No, I'm not. The due diligence I am talking about concerns how multi-partner
marriage could cause problems because our society has so entirely adapted
its laws, institutions, and customs to marriage between two people. It could
also cause problems because sexism is still a reality in society at large.
