Re: [UUPoly-L] Perhaps there is some truth in your statment.
High activity, sports, cars, aggression is labeled as male while pink,
feminine, dresses, domesticity, nurturing is labeled as female.
Right. This is gender. Gender includes which sex people identify themselves
(i.e., "I'm a man" or "I'm a woman"), the classification of characteristics
as masculine or feminine (e.g., short hair is masculine, long hair is
feminine, pants are masculine, skirts are feminine), and the classification
of roles as male or female (e.g., being a ceo is a man's job, being a nurse
is a woman's job).
I think gender is mostly learned.
Sexual orientation is something different. Sexual orientation has to do with
the biological sex of your sex partners. Do you engage in sexual activities
with men or with women? Do you fantasize about engaging in sexual activities
with men or with women? Do you find people of the same biological sex as you
to sexually attractive or not? Do you prefer to socialize with people of the
same sex or people of the opposite sex? Depending on how you answer these,
people will tend to label you as Gay, Lesbian, Straight, or Bisexual.
My question is: Do you think sexual orientation is socially learned? If so,
why?
