Re: [UUPoly-L] Time to draft UUPA talking points?
A copy for me too, of the speakers guidelines please. And I understand your feeling of being overwhelmed, Jasmine, I feel the same way about it all, but I think we have to have a way of responding quickly to such stuff if we can arrange it in order to minimize the spread of misunderstanding. It's probably better not to try to put together talking points when under too much pressure. OTOH, I'd be delighted to be part of a team that takes on the task, though likely others here would surely be even better. The list of things to remember when engaging someone is very helpful for now as a substitute.
Some organizations have a quick response media team that is experienced and able to make suitable responses as soon as they are required when unfavorable press coverage takes place. I should think that the same approach would work for responding to unfavorable blog posts. (After all, in many way bloggers are the media today according to professional blog and media watchers.) What we shouldn't do is remain silent and let voices of authority like Tom continue to run away with the story at will. What he is doing right now does no one any favors - he is wasting energy and time focusing on misconceptions, and these need to be set straight and the debate redirected.
All that said, I really, really don't feel that I'm the best person to be responding at any length at this point in time. This needs to be someone who is an experienced spokesperson for UUPA. I can talk about polyamory and the general issues surrounding it all day long, but I'm much newer at tying in UU values with any eloquence.
Jasmine, would you be willing to say a bit more about what you know about Tom, especially what sort of reputation he has as a UU minister, whether he holds any leadership positions at a district or national level, etc.
I wonder what would happen if UUPA issued an invitation to Tom to engage in a respectful discussion on the subject. It could be done in a chat forum and then perhaps reposted on the UUPA website if he were to consent to it. Or, we could take his general statements and use them to expand the FAQ and feature it more front and center maybe? Just some brainstorming going on here.
