Answering him on his own terms -- I suspect we would be a society composed
primarily of polyamourous marriages, with a few people who decided to "opt
out" in one way or another -- either by remaining single, or by having a
"non-sanctioned" two-person only marriage.

Things would likely be neither better or worse.  It would suit some and not
others.

And yes, the point is, we don't ALL have to make the same choice for a
choice to be ethical and viable.
