 "What if everybody did it?" is not the only way (or necessarily the best way) to decide how you should behave.

I think that particular question has dribbled in from Kant and his "Categorical Imperative" -- however, apparently Kant proposed a variety of questions we can ask ourselves, not just that one -- and Kant has his critics as well.

This is just an aside.? I know that "what if everybody did it?" is a popular way of approaching ethics -- but it is not the only way.

Answering him on his own terms -- I suspect we would be a society composed
primarily of polyamourous marriages, with a few people who decided to "opt
out" in one way or another -- either by remaining single, or by having a
"non-sanctioned" two-person only marriage.

Things would likely be neither better or worse.  It would suit some and not
others.

And yes, the point is, we don't ALL have to make the same choice for a
choice to be ethical and viable.
