Re: [UUPoly-L] New York Times Op-Ed "When 3 Really Is a Crowd "
Yep. Elizabeth Marquardt and her cronies are the principle beneficiaries of the millions of dollars the Bush administration has devoted to the marriage movement, i.e. those who are determined to circumvent freedom to marry, freedom to divorce, and who maintain that the only healthy environment for raising children is one man, one woman monogamously married until the children are grown. Her position here is nothing new for her, she's been beating this drum for a long time now. Her veracity as a researcher is highly suspect. She clearly has a bias and is in no way an objective fact-finder.
Certainly it would be a good thing for us to come up with a compelling response to put forth, especially when she and others who share her agenda like Maggie Gallagher get published in such a high profile manner. The challenge there is that though we know a lot about multi-parenting families anecdotally, we have even fewer valid research sources to which to point than she does. Still, it's nice to see that a court in the U.S. has set a precident for awarding legal parenthood to more than two parents. OTOH, though it's not our issue, I do find it troubling that the court forced the sperm donor to support the child against his wishes. This may well have the effect of discouraging men from helping out lesbian couples who want to be parents.
