We're going to have to deal with this UU history. It will be unpleasant,
ugly, and difficult. But we're going to have to deal with it before we can make
significant progress.
The natural response is try to forget it ever happened and never go there
again -- don't rock the boat. But the presence of poly UUs demanding visibility
in our congregations is rocking that boat and reminding people of those old
failures and scandals and wounds. It would help a lot of people who were UUs
during that time and developed successful poly relationships during that time
would speak up about them. In their absence, we polys today appear, to UUs
who lived through that time, like naive newcomers who simply don't realize what
disasters await us. So our visibility evokes fear that UUism will again be
severely disrupted by a second wave of scandals and failures.
