Re: [UUPoly-L] Poly reality

IMO, today, polyamory could be a similar economic unit, that can help families survive and prosper. (with less damage to the environment). Expanded families do not have to be partriarchial, nor even matriarchial, but co-equal, and thus even stronger, IMO.

I agree. I want to emphasize again that it's not people on this list I worry about. Polyamorists tend to have egalitarian philosophis, and especially those who tend to be educated (such as UU polyamorists). I'm certain the polyamorists on this list could set up healthy multi-partner marriages that help fulfill rather than harm women.

It's not that multi-partner marriage is intrinsically bad. It's just that it opens a lot of doors for abuse and it's not something our society has evolved to deal with (laws, businesses, traditions). Legalizing multi-partner marriage in a productive way is going to require a larger legal framework than passing a law that says "okay, now you can have multiple husbands or wives." It's not the same as legalizing same-sex marriage. And so far, I haven't seen any polyamorist group seriously work on the kind of package of bills that would be required.

If we really want to reduce global warming, and save our planet we need to cooperate more, save more resources, and share the material wealth. Living in small nuclear families is one of the big drains on our society, IMO.

I'm not saying every polyamorist will want to live communally, but just the sharing of social time, and having more secure, loving, stable connections to others, in expanded families could be equally strong as older extended families, IMO. Jealousy, and possesiveness (two key values more for monogamy) are not only socially harmful, but economicly harmful, IMO.
