[UUPoly-L] Hi, I'm Marlena

Hi everyone,

My name is Marlena and I live in Maine. My husband and I have been poly for a while now, but not actively because of the effect it had upon us in the area we lived in before moving here and also because of our families who view our relationships as adultery. We are very close friends with a couple we have known for a long time and were just recently reunited with. Before we moved away from them, my husband and I fell head-over-heels in love with them and would have liked to marry them, had the laws allowed. Now that we have moved back and are reunited, we want to resume our relationship. I had hoped that I could at least tell my mom about this because she is a lesbian and I thought she would understand. Sadly, I don't think she understands or approves, seeing it as wrong somehow. I really thought that she of all people would understand, or at least accept it and be happy for us. She doesn't seem angry, but definately dissappointed and dissapproving. I
don't know if it is because she doesn't want our family to go through all the struggles she has had to deal with as a lesbian, or if she just thinks it's wrong. I think it may be our children she is concerned about because she seems to have these very Hollywood ideas about what it means to be poly. She thinks it is all about sex and that we might traumatize our children in some way. But I tried to explain that being poly is more about love and affection than it is about sex, and that sex in poly relationships occurs the same way that it does in traditional ones: behind closed doors, away from the kids. Hopefully she will come around.

Thanks
