Re: [UUPoly-L] Stranger In A Strange Land
Robert Heinlein is my second favorite author after Octavia Butler.
I read "Stranger In A Strange Land" in High School in the late Sixties (Not
quite as far back as when you were in high school Ed.) I remember the book
having quite an effect upon me, but I don't exactly remember the details of
the book. I will definitely read it again.
I have read "Time Enough For Love" several times and the character Lazarus
Long is one of my personal heroes. Many of Heinlein's characters recur in
other works, such as, "Methusalah's Children", "The Cat Who Walks Through
Walls", "The Number Of The Beast", "To Sail Beyond The Sunset", and others.
Heinlein does indeed seem to advocate a poly lifestyle.
I have not reconciled myself with Heinlein's views on incest. The character
Lazarus appears to feel that incest is okay. So doe's Lazarus' mother and
lover, Maureen Johnson, in "To Sail Beyond The Sunset."
The universal consensus is that these characters evoke Heinlein's personal
views on the subject. I don't share those sentiments. Heinlein also has a
disturbing belief in eugenics and may even have been racist (as in White
Supremacist) in his personal thinking. Despite these disturbing tendencies, I
still enjoy his writing.

I just have to get that book and read it, see what it is that so startled
you and some others! BTW, Harry Truman was President when I was 18-19.
Long time ago. :-)
