Re: [UUPoly-L] Books

"Jason B." <brithistorian@gmail.com> wrote, in response to my comment "Sounds like another inappropriate commercial plug to me." that:

I've got to disagree with you here - I think Jenny's book is perfectly
relevant to the situation at hand, plus she also included a number of
other useful resources. If she had been responding to a general
question with "You can find the answer to that in my book...," I'd
agree with you. But since the question was specifically asking for
books, websites, and other information, I think her post was perfectly
okay. Should she be disqualified from recommending the book just
because she wrote it? I don't think so.

Reasonable people may disagree on many topics, and this is certainly one of them. If she had modestly mentioned her book, and several other books, I would have been less offended. But, when she included:

Read the latest "Sex Talk with Jenny Block" at: (link)

Read her work in The Dallas Voice: (link)

       and on edgedallas.com (link)

See her on Fox News at: (link)

her post took on, for me, the aura of a commercial for herself. That is the part that I find most offensive on this list. I hear lots of commercials on the radio every day, and that is fine with me. On the other hand, in personal social conversations it is very rare for someone to jump in and push his business to his friends and neighbors. I have always thought of this list as more of a group of friends, neighbors, and distant relatives.

Shall we agree to disagree?

Best regards, Chuck Lee.
