Well, if you call 70% condom effectiveness against HPV as "prevention":
http://cancer.about.com/od/hp1/f/condomsHPV.htm
Comparing the risks of the HPV vaccine to HRT is pretty inane, IMO. I went to a
Mayo Clinic seminar on the vaccines (there's another company's vaccine in the
works), and these are pretty straightforward vaccines, basically consisting of
an HPV viral shell but without any RNA load. So, as far as the body is
concerned, after inoculation it really does "contract" HPV and reacts by
cranking out antibodies, just without the annoying cellular dysplasia that
would normally result. So the immunity you get from the vaccine is basically
the same as the immunity you would get by successfully fighting off an active
HPV infection.
Nobody is "experimenting" with human "guinea pigs" at this point. The clinical
trials for Gardasil went exceedingly well, and this virus turns out not to be
an overly complex or tricky one, just especially hardy if the body doesn't
already have antibodies.
I'm just awaiting the completion of clinical trials in men so I can also get
inoculated. Even tho us guys don't have cervixes, we carry the active virus
around and infect our women with it, plus it's looking like the same strains of
HPV also are implicated in oral HPV which can lead to throat & mouth cancers,
as well as anal infections.
I have been tracking the whole HPV thing for years, and my partners and I have
worked hard to educate the poly community about the real risks of HPV. This
vaccine is a medical success story that should be celebrated. It's incomplete
because we need to target some of the other strains of HPV as well, but this
vaccine has the potential to eliminate most of the really dangerous,
cancer-causing strains of HPV out there.
If people get vaccinated, that is - especially before they are ever exposed to
HPV. I highly recommend that all actively poly people seriously consider
getting the vaccine if and when it becomes available/affordable to you, because
active polyfolk are especially at risk for HPV, putting the whole community at
risk. And dealing with HPV is a royal hassle, even when cervical cancer is not
involved.
