Re: [UUPoly-L] a troublesome thought

Pat said much I agree with, but specifically:
<<As for the race issue, I honestly got tired of hearing about it.  Still
am, actually.  Yes, his father was black.  So, we finally have a President
that is only half-white.  Great, but what about his take on the issues?  I
just wish American politics in general were more about substance and less
about 'dazzle', more about the citizens and expanding our freedoms, and less
about sound bites and lobbyists.

So, to bring things back to the main topic, does anyone think this election
season shows any hopeful signs for Poly Acceptance?>>

I strongly agree with this. In fact, I feel like the folks who voted for
him because he was black (or "1/2 black" or mixed race) are as guilty of
racism as those who voted *against* him because he was black. I,
personally, voted for him because he was a Democrat, because he is a
progressive leaning moderate, because he has positions and presented plans
that I not only agree with, but can get excited about. The fact that he
happens to be black is just a 'bonus', i.e., because it does open the path
for people of color to know that it's possible. But I didn't vote for him
because of his race anymore than I voted for Hillary because of her gender.
Yes, her gender was a factor, because I greatly admire the way that she
refuses to allow it to limit her (I actually voted for Bill Clinton in the
primary when he first ran *because* of Hillary's spunk ;-), but I voted for
her because I like *her*, and because I like her politics, not primarily
because she is a woman. There have been black men who have run before for
whom I would not vote, and there have been women who have run before for
whom I would not vote.

And as to the last, I don't know. I dare to hope that this election will
bode will for people outside the "mainstream" in general.
