I think those who say that are mistaken, as you point out, marriage is
a civil matter.
I think they are reacting to the existing situation where the
government is improperly enforcing one religions idea of what marriage
should and should not be.

As long as civil unions aren't relegated to second class status
legally, then I'm fine with that.
I support 100% the right of any church to decide who they will and
will not marry, for whatever reasons they choose, but a marriage done
by Justice of the Peace, or a different church, should not have to
conform to some other church's ideas.

Of course if poly unions ever take off, the legal aspects will get
interesting, but that's what they get paid the big bucks to sort out,
right?
