Re: [UUPoly-L] the VP debate last night

I find the view (not new with me, btw) that a national registry of committed relationships, contracted relationships, covenanted relationships, marriages ... whatever you want to call them ... in which people would register each relationship and the rights specifically shared in the relationship appealing. It is burdensome in that there is no default bundle of rights so you would have to include and exclude in a very intentional and perhaps time consuming fashion the rights of the particular relationship. And multiple registries involving varying mixes of persons could lead to conflicting covenanted/contracted obligations. Having said that ... I am not sure it would be much more confusing than what we have now between prenups, guardianships, health care surrogates, various ownership agreements, etc. And on the upside, anyones could define, in as little or as much detail as desired, in as small or large a group (meaning of course two or more persons) as desired, relationships. If the people involved in the relationship want some non-legal recognition of the relationship then they can seek out that recognition ... call it " marriage" or "hand binding" or whatever.
