i always felt that deflowering happened at the first time one had sex -- and i define sex by at least two people, at least one set of genitals, and the possibility of catching as STI should one be present. therefore, manual sex, where one could catch and STI through cuts on the hand, or on the genitals (male or female), counts as sex just as much as penile-vaginal sex, but masturbation does not count as sex -- although this one i do wonder about. i think it can be very important to specify which type of sex we are referring to when discussing 'sex,' particularly as there can be the several acts that count as sex, and then some people conflate biological sex with gender. speaking just of the acts of sex, however, 'deflowering' is usually used to refer only to women and the breaking of the hymen, so expanding (changing?) the definition to mean the first time one has sex (of whatever type) makes more sense to me. especially as the hymen can also be broken by other methods than vaginal penetration.
