I also think it make sense for the archives to be private, if only because every other Poly list I am on runs this way, and it is easy to forget this one is different. (Thought, being private made add a false sense of security.) I've regrated having something indexed by google a few times.

More then that, I don't see that the public archives really do any good -- the face UUP puts out to the world contains many resources, and this doesn't add much.  Besides, if someone wants to know, they can join, which really is lower barier then going to town ahll to look up something.
