Well it was 50 years ago today that the music died when Buddy Holly's plane crashed in Iowa. I just read something on an airline pilots' web page saying the pilot was pretty inexperienced on flying on instruments.  He and the aircraft owner didn't go with their gut, but tried too eagerly to please three aspiring musicians.
 
I was in first grade at the time, so it was a little before my time.  Some of you I know do remember.  I really did not become that aware of it until Don McLean's Bye Bye Miss American Pie was brought to my attention.
