There's a story I read that a town clerk in Colorado started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the 1970's, because the law did not make it clear what the gender makeup of the spouses had to be.

An irate farmer then brought in his mule, saying he wanted to marry her.

"How old is she?" the clerk asked.

"Seven," the farmer said.

The clerk explained this was well below the age of consent, thus settling the matter.
